Statement

Being in one culture sometimes makes a person blind to other cultures as well as his/her own culture, even in a world filled with mass media. When I left my country, Japan, and started living in the USA, cultural differences led me to discoveries about my own culture and totally changed my way of seeing the world. My eyes became a lot more sensitive about traces of history, relations between countries or cultures and problems and hopes in contemporary world.

For this series, I went back to observe my country from my present viewpoint. When I photograph, I photograph real life to visually translate my thoughts. I photograph metaphorically rather than literally. This series is not complete and will never complete. It will be a life-long journey to search for where I am from as well as who I am.Ayano Hisa
